UFRPE Researcher joins Feedpedia team, a World Information System on Animal Feed

Fábio de Souza Mendonça*, a Post Graduation professor on the Veterinary Medicine Program (PPGMV) of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), will join the researchers team a World Information System on animal feeding, www.feedipedia.org. Feedipedia is a worldwide on-line encyclopedia of up-to-date information of  feed resources.

The platform is a partnership between the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) with the French National Institute of Agricultural Research (INRA), French Agricultural Research Center for International Development (CIRAD), and French Association for Animal Production (AFZ). There you can find information on the nature, occurrence, chemical composition, nutritional value and safe use of almost 1,400 cattle feeds worldwide.

The main purpose of Feedipedia ** is to provide extension agents and developers, planners, project formulators, livestock farmers, science managers, policy makers, students and researchers with the latest scientific information to help them to properly identify, characterize and use the food resources to develop the livestock sector.

Therefore, the site is of great importance for developing countries where food resources are rather wasted and/or misused due to a lack of information. Providing global knowledge about food resources, including unconventional and lesser-known resources, contributes to the development and
use of innovative and appropriate food options and strategies for each region.

* Fábio de Souza Mendonça holds a PhD in Veterinary Science from UFRPE. He is currently associate professor I, coordinator of the Graduate
Program in Veterinary Medicine and coordinator of the Laboratory of Animal
Diagnosis of UFRPE.
